Our driver development team has a proven track record of attracting and retaining one of the safest and most reliable professional driver fleets in the industry. Our drivers are courteous, hard-working, honest, reliable, and, above all else, they are among the safest drivers on the road. Our safety program focuses on accident prevention through safe driver training, log audits, counseling, technical reporting systems and a company wide emphasis on safety.
With the advent of CSA, CHTL has adopted new, more stringent policies to correspond with CSA guidelines. Owner/Operators and carriers are reevaluated on a regular, ongoing basis. Those with evaluations that fall below our high standards will not be used.
Year after year, CHTL maintains higher safety standards than federal safety regulations require. Intense screening ensures that the drivers/carriers hauling your freight are the best in the industry.
Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicles. It introduces a new enforcement and compliance model that allows FMCSA and its State Partners to contact a larger number of carriers earlier in order to address safety problems before crashes occur. Rolled out in December 2010, the program establishes a new nationwide system for making the roads safer for motor carriers and the public alike!
In the development of the CSA program, FMCSA sought to incorporate several key attributes.
FLEXIBILITY – Adapt to a Changing Environment. Accommodates changes to the transportation environment, such as evolutions in technology and changes in programmatic responsibilities.
EFFICIENCY – Maximize Use of Resources. Improves Federal and State enforcement staff productivity, as well as the safety performance of members of the motor carrier community.
EFFECTIVENESS – Improve Safety Performance. Identifies behaviors associated with safety risk; focuses compliance, enforcement, and remediation efforts on those unsafe behaviors.
INNOVATION – Leverage Data and Technology. Improves safety through the innovative use of technology to track and update safety performance data.
EQUITABILITY – Be Fair and Unbiased. Assesses and evaluates motor carrier safety and enforces Federal laws and safety regulations to ensure consistent treatment of similarly situated members of the motor carrier community.
Safety is one of our highest priorities. We know safety takes dedication, determination, and teamwork. As such, CHTL management and drivers meet several times a year to train, update skills, and become informed of new rules and regulations changes. Our safety program focuses on accident prevention through safe driver training, log audits, counseling, technical reporting systems and a company wide emphasis on safety. As a result our drivers are among the safest drivers on the road today.
Once a year, we hold a celebratory safety meeting where we recognize those drivers that have excelled in many areas, including safety. Click here for our latest annual safety meeting recap.

2010 Contractor of the Year
Wes Winters
Wes began his driving career in the late 1980's at RJ Reynolds Tobacco. He bought his first truck in 1999 which launched his career as an Owner/Operator. He leased to a local transportation company near his home in Boonville, NC and in January 2009, he and his wife, Robyn incorporated their small trucking business and are now co-owners of Hillside Trucking, Inc. In July 2009, Wes moved his lease to CHTL and today, he continues to operate his 2000 Freightliner Classic pulling freight anywhere from the mid-west to New England and all stops in between. Wes has made quite a bit of modern day progress over the course of his driving career - moving from his pen-and-ink bookkeeping system to the use of accounting software for expense and income tracking, smartphone with bluetooth capability, GPS unit, and laptop with wi-fi capability for the truck for mapping and email. During his home time, he enjoys grilling anything he can get his hands on and spending time with his children - his daughter, Melissa, the grandchildren, James & Julia, his step-son Justin, and his "little man", 5-year old Eli. Wes's love for truck driving has influenced Justin to pursue a similar career thus making the long haul life a family affair.
